Brehon Law

Above: Document of Brehon Law Code

At Uisneach two brothers of LaoghaireFiacha Enda—"came against Patrick," and some of his follow were murdered there.    But  Enda believed,  was baptized and gave Patrick his son Cormac and every ninth ridg his land throughout Ireland.    Whereupon the Ard-ri declar " He shall have the land that Enda had from Laoghai . Fifteen seanchleithe of Enda Airteach, north of Cruach in Connacht."    Similarly the king’s brother Conall bestow on Patrick, who baptised him, the site for a church—twen yards from  end  to  end—known  as  the  Great  Church Padraig at Domhnach Padraig on the banks of the Black water in  Meath:   Conall was subsequently slain  at Ma Sleacht.    Feidlimidh,   another   brother   of   the   high   kin bestowed on Patrick and his nephew Loman his estate : Trim where one of the first churches in Ireland was erects He and his whole household believed, and his son Foirtchear was consigned to the special care of Loman who had com up the river, having separated from Patrick at the mout of the Boyne.
Anghus, wife of Laoghaire, was baptised also by Patrick In thanksgiving for his saving the life of her son Lughaidh, through the blessing of the archangel Michael, she gave each to the Apostle a sheep from every flock, and to God’s noor a portion of her every meal. This she enjoined further, as a custom throughout Ireland, on all who received baptism and the faith : hence the custom of the Michaelmas sheep and Michael’s portion. Donnchadh king of Osraighe also sent food and provisions on the Apostles‘ feasts for God’s poor in every principal church. He also placed an orphan or poor person to be maintained for God’s sake in every household 111 Osraighe, and provided three bags—for a tithe of the household’s food, beeswax for the poor, and Michael’s portion, respectively. Yet Lughaidh did not die in the faith. The full significance of the queen’s injunction will be appreciated as we follow the movements of the apostle and find kingdom after kingdom, at least over the greater part of Leath Chuinn, under the rule of Laoghaire’s kinsmen. His more restricted journeyings in Leath Mogha reveal also the intimate relations, through intermarriage, then obtaining between all the royal houses of Ireland, and testify to Patrick’s wisdom in primarily addressing himself to the kings and chieftains and, as he proceeded, securing their adhesion as far as possible.
Special reference must be made in advance to two outstanding results of Patrick’s mission : the revision, six years after his arrival, of the Brehon Law Code at Tara— where we often find him—and the founding of Armagh after a further six years, or perhaps more. It will be well to bear in mind that the revised Code regulated, among other things, the subsequent inauguration of kings and the conditions under width lands were held by the Church; while the bequests   and   submission   to   Armagh,   promiscuously   menloned in the Saint’s life, could only have been made after Armagh had  been  definitely chosen as the Primatial See. For order’s sake, to trace the labors saint circuitously by Naas and Cashed on to Cruachain and other seats of royalty in the west, completing the cir of Ireland by the north and north-east where he finally down life’s burden.    But serious anachronisms would rest and so the order of place, however desirable, must give to chronological sequence which, again, can be but par the Apostle having paid repeated visits to the west, as many districts in the north and elsewhere.
